Recently Jeremy and I have been involved in a Bible study called "Not a Fan." The idea is to develop your walk with the Lord. The idea behind the title is that so many times it is easy for us to be "just a fan" of God but not necessarily a devoted follower.
It's always amazing how when God has a message He wants you to hear, how often you end up hearing it. We started the Bible study 3 weeks ago. During the first week I was leading morning devotions in my homeroom. Wouldn't you know, it was talking about our devotion to God.
During this time, the devotional encouraged students to think about how much time they spend doing things each day... It might go something like this....
6 hours sleeping
30 minutes getting ready
1 hour driving
30 minutes preparing for my students
71/2 hours teaching
30 minutes preparing to go home
1 hour driving
30 minutes exercising
1 hour showering, and doing my hair
30 minutes cooking
30 minutes eating
2 1/2 hours watching tv and grading papers
then I go to bed for the remaining 2 hours of the 24 hour period...
All that said,t his exercise wanted us to figure how much time we spend in prayer and reading the Bible... and really communicating with the Lord. I'd say, I spend between 15-30 minutes a day in prayer and Bible reading... which I always thought was "pretty good." Do you know what percentage that is? 1-2%. Now let's put it on a larger scale... think about the week... include church or whatnot... even on "super great weeks," I figure I'm about 2-6%.
Now I know what you're thinking... we do have things we need to do, and things that need to get done, and we have to work... and we need to sleep... and eat... and shower. I know that... I guess my point is, that I've always thought I was "doing really well," in regards to my walk... and that I did spend "a lot" of time with the Lord... but when I saw that I give a meager 2% of my day, I guess it hit me. YIKES!! I spend 10% -ish of my time watching tv, or facebooking, or just wasting time. I spend anywhere from 25-33% of my time, sleeping.
The reality of it all, just hit me. 2%? That's it? Now I have a great job that actually is conducive to my walking in that I work at a Christian school, so I am constantly reaffirming our belief, and able to delve into the Bible as often as I need or want to... but really, personal time... and all I give is 2%?
So, with the new Bible study (as I mentioned up there) I am trying to "redefine" my relationship with the Lord. I want to not only be a follower in outward appearance, but I also want to commit that it is a genuine relationship within.
I know I'm not perfect, but all I can say, is I'm on a new adventure... I really do want to be a Follower of Jesus Christ, instead of just a mediocre fan standing on the sidelines while everyone else does His work.
It is in this mindset that I am hoping and praying to see the Lord move. I am hoping and praying that He can use me. I am hoping and praying that I will continually seek and be in His will (not mine). It is because of Jesus that I even have hope at all.
Anyway... it's just somethings to think about... it was very eye-opening for me, and I really wanted to have it documented more for myself to look back on... but I figure if someone else stops and thinks about it.. then it probably is good too.
All right that's all I've got now. Stay tuned for the next episode.
